Naming your people and portals

portals

Out of the box WorkZerk calls the people you onboard "people", or a "person" for one of them. If you onboard contractors, staff, volunteers or suppliers, use that word instead and every screen reads like it was built for you.

Set it on a single portal, or set it once for your account so every new portal starts with it. You can rename "portal" too.

Setting it on one portal

Open the portal and click the gear beside its name (Portal Settings), then the Wording tab. The People section at the top has two boxes:

  • Plural (a group). The word for more than one: contractors, staff, volunteers.
  • Singular (one of them). The word for one: contractor, staff member, volunteer.

Fill in both and save. A blank box falls back to "people" or "person". Each box holds up to 50 characters. Changing the words relabels things and nothing else: the people on the portal, their links and what they have submitted are untouched.

There are two boxes because plurals are not reliably the singular plus an s. One "staff member" is part of "staff", so you give both and every sentence reads properly.

While a portal still uses the default words, a pencil sits beside the People heading on the portal page. It opens these two boxes directly.

Lowercase reads best

Type your words in lowercase. Most places the word lands mid-sentence ("no volunteers yet"), and WorkZerk capitalizes the first letter itself where a heading needs it. Capitals you type on purpose are kept, so "AV Team" stays "AV Team".

Making it the default for new portals

Under the two boxes, tick Use on new portals too when you save. The words are copied to your account and every portal you create from then on starts with them. Only boxes you filled in are copied, and portals that already exist keep the words they have.

You can also set the account default without opening a portal: go to Account, then Profile, then the Wording tab, and use the People wording card. Both boxes suggest people, staff, volunteers, team, suppliers and contractors (plus crew), and take anything else you type. The same rule applies: it seeds new portals and does not rename existing ones.

Renaming "portal"

The Portal wording card on the same Account Wording tab renames portals themselves, singular and plural, up to 40 characters each. It suggests portal, onboarding, job and project. Unlike the people words, this is one setting for the whole account, and it changes the sidebar, the portals list and your own screens straight away.

Where your words show up

A portal's people words appear:

  • On your own screens for that portal, including section headings, buttons and counts.
  • On the private link each person opens.
  • On the printable copy of the portal.

Screens that cover every portal at once, such as the sidebar's statuses link, the Requests screen, reports and automations, use your account's default people words.

Changes land on the next page load. A colleague with the portal already open sees the new words after a refresh.

The rest of the Wording tab rewords the headings and buttons on the page people open. See changing the words people see.
